Loyola Bhavan, Bhubaneswar
This is the Mother House of Orissa Jesuits. The pioneers, who first stayed in a rented house and later shifted to HLC, Satyanagar, moved into Loyola Bhavan in 1985. The Loyola Bhavan community is an extended community and its members are wide spread in Orissa. Till 2000, Jesuits in Kandhamal district too were part of this community.
The house situated at 58 Forest Park in Bhubaneswar was named Loyola Bhavan and was set up as a Jesuit House. It was officially recognized as a Jesuit Residence on 24 July 1985. Fr John Guidera was its first Superior.
From the time when the urgent requests came from the Archbishop of Bhubaneswar, a need to find a house that will serve as the “mother house” of our work in the State of Orissa was felt. It took the concerted effort and hard work of Fr Guidera to make Loyola Bhavan happen.
The original house was renovated and adapted for the use of the Jesuits running the Human Life Centre, teaching at St Joseph’s School and lending a hand to the parish community. Later on, more improvements in the house and in the grounds that surround it were made by the successive Superiors, Frs McGrath, Amalraj and Oscar Horo.
During the Khandahmal riots in 2008, it became the rallying point for relief and rehabilitation schemes.
