In 1976, the Loyola College of Education – or B Ed College as it is popularly known – launched its first class of 50 students with a dubious, verbal “assurance” of affiliation for one year. It would be nice to record that this was the culmination of four years – since ’72 – of dreaming, striving, urging and that it had borne fruit.
As Rector of Loyola School, Ken Judge became convinced that we SJs should be teaching teachers and not just students. So with characteristic thoroughness he enrolled in the Teachers Training College at the Utkal University, in the neighbouring State of Orissa, earned his degree and began teaching, in Hindi, in a local privately owned education college.
The education college finally folded up and Ken persuaded our Jesuit Provincial that we Jesuits should continue the work. Single handed he began the Loyola Teachers Training College. Times without number he took the grueling trip to the State capital to plead for government recognition of his College, and when at last he had it, Ken became Principal, Registrar, Recruiter and Teacher all at the same time. As the years progressed Ken taught almost every subject except spinning and weaving – compulsory subject for teacher in our State!
The students of the first three years of LCE history cherish bright memories of a person who was simple, straight-forward, and evidently – from his sincerity and interest – devoted to training his students as effective and dynamic teachers. They felt themselves called to more beyond the limitations that they experienced in themselves. This they attributed to “Fr Judge’s ability to call forth the good in them and to inspire others with his leadership”. Most of that generation (1976-79) found in him not only a simple and sincere person, but a dependable friend.
“In the end”, said one of his fellow Jesuits, “in establishing the B Ed College all of his training came together there – his M Sc, his experience in both a Hindi and English medium school, his mastery of the Hindi language, his B Ed at Bhubaneswar and his M Ed at Columbia – Ken had almost put it all together.”
